Why it was unusual
AJMC reports that FDA reviewers recommended against all seven, and that briefing materials found the studies, including five BPC-157 trials, too short and small to establish safety or effectiveness for the uses reviewed.
What happens next
- The FDA decides whether to accept each recommendation.
- If it does, it needs notice and comment rulemaking: a proposed rule, public comment, then a final rule.
- Only then could compounding pharmacies legally prepare the substances.
AJMC adds that compounded drugs generally sit outside normal pharmacy coverage, so patients would likely still pay out of pocket.
