The FDA peptide U-turn, explained in five steps

US policy on some peptides swung from tightening to loosening in 2026.
- None of it is an FDA approval, and none of it changes Canadian rules.
1. February: a reclassification
On February 27, 2026, the US health secretary announced that about 14 of 19 restricted peptides would move back to a category that allows prescription compounding. A category move is not an approval, and it does not create approved uses, doses or proven safety data.
2. July: the panel overrules the staff
An FDA advisory committee met on July 23 and 24 to review BPC-157, TB-500, KPV and MOTS-C. The agency's own career scientists were unanimous against adding them, citing almost no human clinical data. A reconstituted panel, with eight new members, most reported to have financial ties to peptide businesses, voted to back six peptides. The vote is nonbinding.
3. The science gap
For at least one headline peptide, the reported evidence is mostly animal research, with very limited human data. That gap is the heart of the dispute.
4. A state by state patchwork
Some US states are permissive, others are tightening, and more than 40 state attorneys general wrote to the FDA in 2025 about contamination and safety, per the report.
5. October: a policy in the pipeline
On October 15, a proposed interim policy went to the White House budget office. It could let qualified compounding pharmacies make certain experimental peptides. As of October 20 it was not final. Formal rulemaking could take 12 to 24 months.
